As a kid growing up in Ottawa, Canada, Kimberly Genevieve fantasized about living in a faraway land known as Hollywood.

Fast forward a couple decades, and she’s living the dream (in West Hollywood, but still) as a photographer who portrays Los Angeles as a paradise of pastels and sunshine.

Genevieve, 32, came to Southern California in her college years without much of a plan. “I always tell people I’m truly living the American dream because, somehow, I figured I would come up with it when I moved out here and something would happen,” she said.

It did. She became enthralled by photography, posting like crazy to Instagram at a time when the image-sharing service was blowing up. Her photos got noticed. Commercial work followed. She amassed more than 100,000 followers.

To scroll through Genevieve’s Instagram feed is to journey through a mood-enhanced version of Los Angeles. The grimy side to city life is excluded. Genevieve acknowledges that.

“It’s clean. It’s fun. It’s light,” she said. “There’s so much going on in the world. I don’t want to post anything that’s going to make people sad or overthink. I like to post stuff that makes people happy.”

Genevieve shared a selection of some of her favorite images from her Instagram account.
